Northern Neighbors

Stabilizing Families.
Strengthening Community.

Northern Neighbors is a community-rooted effort in North Central Minnesota supporting immigrant communities locally and individuals impacted by detention across our region by connecting people to legal pathways, trusted supports, mutual aid, and systems of care shaped by those most impacted.

Practical Support. Real Access. Community-Led.

In rural communities, immigrant neighbors often face barriers to resources, infrastructure, and coordinated support that are more readily available in larger cities. Northern Neighbors works to help close that gap.

What we Do

Two Ways We Show Up. One Commitment.

We support immigrant communities in our local area while also providing direct support to individuals impacted by detention across our region. Our work includes connecting people to legal resources, offering translation and communication support, coordinating mutual aid, and building community-based systems that strengthen access, understanding, and care.

1. In the Community

We work alongside immigrant neighbors in the Brainerd Lakes Area to build long-term support and strengthen local systems of care.

Connecting individuals and families to trusted resources and support networks
Coordinating mutual aid and community-based assistance
Education and community trainings
Building local capacity to respond thoughtfully and sustainably

2. In Detention (Regional Support)

When someone is detained, early moments are critical. We provide support to individuals navigating detention within our region so they are not facing complex systems alone.

Intake coordination and support in understanding next steps
Connection to qualified immigration legal providers
Translation and communication support
Support for individuals and families during time-sensitive moments

Empowering Communities

Building Practical Support in North Central Minnesota

Resource Connection & Navigation

We help people connect with trusted resources and support, including legal resources when needed. This includes sharing information, making referrals, and helping people better understand their options as they navigate complex systems.

Mutual Aid & Community Support

We coordinate mutual aid and community-based support, helping connect people to resources and stabilize families during difficult moments.

Community Education

We share Know Your Rights information and offer community-based learning opportunities that help people better understand their rights, available resources, and how to navigate complex systems.

Community Response

We respond to urgent needs by helping coordinate support, share timely information, and connect people to resources during critical moments, including detention.

Grounded in Community

This work is growing in real time, shaped by the needs of the community.

Northern Neighbors grew out of local organizing efforts in the Brainerd Lakes Area, including work connected to Brainerd Lakes Area Indivisible, and continues to evolve with support from community partners, including fiscal sponsorship through The Sowing Room.
